Sounds of home - FSO

One of the things I love most about living on a farm is the peace and quiet.  I guess I don't take much notice of the familiar sounds, just as city dwellers don't take much notice of traffic noise.  I hadn't even heard the milk tanker (which goes past every day) rumbling past my house so was surprised when I looked out and there it was sitting by my driveway, broken down.  It must have been there for ages because the repair vehicle had already arrived.

But a helicopter does not arrive to spread fertiliser every day - I hear that!.

If a tractor goes up the road I probably won't hear it, even though they are quite noisy.

But when my granddaughter goes putt-putting past on her little bike - I hear that!

What are some of the other sounds the might get my attention?
 Horses talking might do it.

My son taking a hammer to my roof - oh yeah, that would do it!

The happy sound of children laughing and paddling?  Yep, for sure.

And when the grand-daughters crank up the music and sing? No doubt about it, I hear that!!  That is the sound I love!

I'd like to do Nan U's 'blind hike’ sometime.  Maybe I will on our next long weekend when I will be touring further north with a friend.  Will have to remember to pack a blindfold (but I'll leave the silk scarf at home in case he thinks I'm too kinky)! and wander around noticing what I hear and take pictures pointing in the direction of the sound. Sounds (??) like fun actually.  Thanks for this topic, Nan U.  It really had me thinking about what I hear as opposed to all the sounds around me that I don't actually hear.

Wonder what the rest of the FSO team came up with!  Check them out here.

  2. Hi Pauline.

Do you have a dairy farm? My old bro in Gold coast used to have a farm selling calfs. It didn't work out because he is a lawyer.

  4. Townies often say that the countryside is quiet. The countryside is very far from quiet. The noises are just different. I agree that most of the time we don't hear the noises whether we are in town or country (I exclude noise made by iinconsiderate neighbours from that - not that I've ever experienced them but I know those who have) but there are always the exceptions. I enjoyed knowing what yours were.

Hmm. Silk scarves eh?! Oh I'm sure he won't think you're kinky. But what will you use instead?

  7. Wonderful post, Pauline. It's neat to think about the things we hear every day to the point of not hearing them any more. My favorite pictures are the roof and the horse talking at you.
    cheers!

  13. It's funny about sounds we take for granted. A bus stop near our office was moved. I used to remark how seldom I heard a bus that stopped right outside of our office. The stop was moved and now I miss the sound I hardly ever heard. I'm glad you mentioned this twist on the theme. Have a great weekend, Pauline. Elaine

  16. These are beautiful photographs, Pauline. I love the ruralness of them, the green, wide open spaces.
The horses are a crack up! Is he yelling about the bite on the rump?

  18. What a good post - made me smile.
I don't know about doing a blind hike - I'm a bit of a chicken about things like that, but I might hike up somewhere and put on a blindfold to sit and listen. Great idea!

  19. Seeing the hammering on the roof reminded me of being up on my roof and nearly falling. Hammering on a when metal roof is not a good idea. That horse was a great shot it to get it where it does look like he could be saying something.

  21. Pauline, I could have sworn I left a comment here. I feel so bad that I didn't. I loved your take on this theme. I like the expression on the horses and I love that you love hearing your grandkids sing. So much fun.
