Friday My Town Shoot Out - Domestic Animals

Welcome to my Friday "My Family Domestic Animals" shoot out. Thank you, Sandy for the theme!

Two out of the three cats in our family have been gifts from me to other family members. About five years ago my daughter suggested I might like to give her daughter, Jami, a kitten for Christmas. I traipsed around the SPCA places and at one of them a little grey kitten chose me to go home with. Lucy stayed with me for a couple of weeks until Christmas, so when the time came for her to go home with Jami I was a little sad.

Say hello to Lucy:

Lola was found abondoned in a quarry by a girl I worked with, just before Christmas. She was very tiny, about 6 weeks old, and had no tail. Around that time my younger daughter had been saying how they were going to get a kitten and I knew she would adore this little thing that had been thrown on the scrap heap. Lola has become the most indulged pet I've ever had contact with. She comes to visit and goes on holidays!

Making sure she's not left behind

Lola and my grand-daughters old kitten, Mimsy, size each other up in my garden.

Lulu is the latest addition to my son's family here on the farm. She often comes to visit with the grand-daughters, stuck down the front of a shirt or carried in a school bag.

She's still at the kitten stage and is very playful

Now meet this family of chooks. Mother and chicks - doesn't she look so proud?

Proud father struts his stuff!

Ruffled feathers still look lovely, I think:

Dogs are my favourite domestic animal. Here's my Lewey, my best mate, an Australian Blue Heeler, and a something unknown cross. He was found in Auckland, living out of garbage cans and after a few false starts, eventually found his way to me. He used to be absolutely terrified of men but is pretty much over that fear now although he will still slink away looking totally dejected if i growl at him at all. He's getting old now and whereas he was quite red when he was young, he's now faded to an orange-ish/pinky colour, a bit weird to be honest. But if I catch him at the right angle and in good light, he still looks like a fine cattle dog.

Lewey's best mate is not one of the other catttle dogs on the farm but Sam, who is Georgia's litle pet.

My other favourite dogs, Brose and Lass, belong to my friend, Chris.
This is Brose..... Heaven is the touch of Chris' hand..

Lass rests in the shade of a tree after a hard day at work.

I know a lamb is a bit of a stretch as a domestic animal but pet lambs usually think they are part of their adoptive family. Des (don't ask me to explain the name choosing process) follows Georgia when she comes to visit and protests loudly when he is made to stay outside on the deck.

My last photo is of Mene, a lovely little cat who died a few weeks ago and who I miss a lot.

I'm proud of myself for managing a one-armed shoot out. I've been using my left hand to move the mouse and you'd be surprised how stupid my left hand is. It has great difficulty working out the difference between left and right, is always right clicking when my brain has clearly sent it the message to left click. But I think we are making progress, so I'm hoping to get around to visit everyone else's blogs over the weekend.

Happy weekend, everyone!

  1. Your daughters cats are adorable and I love all the dog photos, but that lamb....that is the cutest most adorable little lamb I have ever seeen.

I hope your hand/arm gets better. I know what it's like to have that kind of pain. (I have R.A.) Sometimes, you just have to give it a rest.

You did very well for a one-armed shoot out.

  2. Yours is the first blog I've read this (northern hemisphere) morning, Pauline. I've never been into keeping domestic pets because my life-style isn't pet-friendly. Although I loved my cat BP very much. But he wasn't my pet. I was his. Anyway this posting was a lovely start to my day and I've enjoyed meeting your friends.

I'm glad your left arm is performing!

  5. Great set of pets you have Pauline. I like Lucy's eyes. Can I ask you? Where did you get the name of Lola. In Filipino language it means grandmother. Lolo is grandfather. I can say unique names then.

  9. Cats really like to get into things and sit on top of things...it's almost as if they are constantly posing.

  10. My right hand keeps turning the camera off instead of pushing the picture button next to the on, off, button. When i get home I am mad at the camera for my own ditsy-ness. I love your shoot. All the animals look so soft and so lovable! Thank you for the tour of your paddock. I enjoyed it!=D

  12. I think you are doing extremely well with that left hand: much much better than I would be! You have some lovely cat, dog, lamb, and chicken (!!) photos here. So many people I know are beginning to raise chickens, right in town, too. As a child on a farm I used to be afraid of them b/c they would peck at my hand when I collected eggs. But they really make sense, and they are beautiful too.

  13. Redlan, I have no idea how my daughter came up with the name Lola except that she announced she had always wanted a cat named Lola. And Lola will never get to be a mother, let alone a grandmother.
Sarah Lulu, the kitten named after you was named via a process of elimination. We already had Lola and Lucy in the family so my grand-daughters came up with Lulu because it sounded like the others. It does get a bit confusing sometimes, but I can get my own kids' names mixed up so no-one minds too much if I call their cat by the wrong name.

  14. The cats are so adorable!Give your left hand sometime to get used to it, soon it will be much easier to manage the mouse with your left.

  17. Theya are all adorable! So very sorry you lost your kit - hugs! Take good care of that hand!
I just loved the shot of the lamb! LOL - we had a pair of baby goats that we hand fed...they had that same look at the back door - what do you mean we have to stay here. One day we went off to the store and came home to find they had managed to get the door open and were playing king of the hill on our couch. No damage..just fun! Wonderful shoot out!! Sarah

  19. Especially loved the lamb abd Brose's contented look. Glad you haven't had to succumb to the right fore-arm problem and hope it leaves you soon.

  21. I,of course, and very fond of Lewey. He is quite a handsome heeler and indeed does look quite a bit like my Shiner. I also like the lamb, they always look so sweet and innocent, until they grow up that is...lol

  22. I loved every single one of your photos! Each one showed a very sweet look. What a beautiful farm too!

  23. Your Lewey's behavior is similar to our Zip. If you raise your voice, he cowers like he's being beaten. It's the healer part of them both that want's so hard to please their owners. Nice shoot out Pualine. I hope your wrist starts to get better. A few years ago I learned my lesson about having good posture when sitting at the computer. My lower back and neck started acting up, and it ended up being some really stupid posture I had while sitting at the computer. I didn't believe my Doc when she first suggested that. But later, I discovered she was right. Take care.
